The Role of Diet in Acne Treatment



It is no longer news that nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne, making it the most common skin disease. It is most common during adolescent affecting more than 85% of teenagers.

It is also no news that diet plays a very important role when it comes to treating acne. Let me recall that acne is caused by the clogging of pores and an inflammation of the sebaceous gland and hair follicle that are present on our faces, back and chest. This infers that it is an internal disease and should be attacked from that angle.

Making the necessary dietary change can go a long way in reducing or totally eliminating your acne. This system requires much discipline and consistency on the part of the sufferer because may mean forfeiting some of the meal you enjoy most.

In a nutshell, below are list of dietary changes that acne sufferers should adhere to.

  • The inclusion of high-fibre diet and cereals, legumes, lots of veggies and fruits is a good start to help minimize the wrong food. The consumption of fibre helps aid digestion and improves the skin.

  • Do everything you can to avoid refined carbohydrate

  • Your consumption of junk food and fat intake should be drastically reduced. Junk foods have low zinc.

  • Avoid fried foods. This one may require much discipline.

  • Eat food that contains zinc supplement. Soya beans, liver, oyster, sesame seed etc contains zinc.

  • Drink a lot of water. Water helps the body system to function properly. Six to eight glass of water daily is recommended.

  • Avoid food with fatty acid. Examples are margarine, peanuts, milk etc.

  • Start taking lots of supplement that enhances healthy skin.
